Drains Flooding in Heavy Rain | Why Cirencester Backs Up
Why Cirencester drains back up in heavy rain, from combined sewers to low-lying estates. What you can control and when to call a drainage engineer.
When heavy rain hits Cirencester, some properties flood and others don't. It's not random. The reason your drain backs up onto the patio or into the utility room while your neighbour's stays clear usually comes down to three things: the type of drainage system serving your property, where you sit in the town's topography, and the condition of your own pipework. All three interact. Two of them you can do something about.
Surface water and foul water: they're not the same pipe
Start here, because most homeowners don't know this and it matters.
Modern properties, anything built post-1970 in most of Cirencester's newer estates, should have two separate drainage systems. Foul water, from your toilets, sinks and baths, goes to the public sewer and on to a treatment works. Surface water, from your roof, driveway and paths, goes to a separate system that discharges to a soakaway, a watercourse or a surface water sewer.
If those systems are separate and working properly, heavy rainfall should not cause your foul drains to back up. The surface water goes its own way. You might get standing water on the drive; you shouldn't get sewage backing up into the downstairs bathroom.
Older properties are a different story.
Combined sewers: the real problem in much of Cirencester
Large parts of central Cirencester, including streets around the Market Place, Watermoor, and much of the older residential stock in the town centre, are served by combined sewers. One pipe takes both foul water and surface water away together.
Thames Water built and maintains the combined network. In dry weather, it copes fine. But a combined sewer that handles maybe 20 litres per second of mixed flows on an ordinary day can receive five or ten times that volume during a prolonged downpour. The system slows, pressure builds, and water backs up the path of least resistance, which is often up through the lowest drain on your property.
This is not a blocked drain in the usual sense. Your pipework might be perfectly clear. The problem is hydraulic: the public sewer is temporarily surcharging, and there's nowhere for the water to go except backwards.
You can't fix Thames Water's combined sewer. What you can do is make sure your own pipework isn't making it worse, and fit flood protection where it counts.
Low-lying areas take the hit first
Circencester sits in a shallow bowl of Cotswold limestone, and the River Churn runs through it. That matters when rain is heavy.
The areas that see the worst drain backflow and surface flooding are generally the lowest-lying parts of the town and the surrounding villages. Watermoor and the roads running down towards the Churn get it. Parts of Siddington, just south of the town, flood regularly because the ground is flat and the watercourses are close to capacity before the rain even starts. Down Ampney and South Cerney, sitting on the Thames floodplain a few miles east, have far less topographic relief than the town itself, so surface water has nowhere to drain to quickly.
On the Chesterton estate and around Kings Hill, the ground is higher and drainage generally performs better in heavy rain. New Mills, despite the name, tends to hold up reasonably well. The Beeches and Four Acres are mid-range.
If you're in a low-lying spot, especially in a combined sewer area, you need to be realistic: in a serious storm event, some backflow pressure is going to find your drains. Your goal is to slow it down, not necessarily eliminate it.
What you can actually control
This is where it becomes actionable.
Your private drain condition matters more than most people think. A combined sewer surcharging under your road is a given. But if your own lateral drain, the pipe running from your property to the public sewer, is partially blocked with grease, root intrusion or collapsed sections, it will back up at far lower pressures than a clean pipe would. The surcharge event just exposes a weakness that was already there.
High-pressure water jetting clears the bore of the pipe properly, not just enough to get water moving again. Root cutting removes the mass of fine roots that creep in through joints on older clay pipes, which is common on the older residential streets in and around the town centre. A CCTV survey tells you whether there's a structural problem worth fixing before it fails in the worst possible weather.
A few other things worth considering:
- Fitting a double-seal anti-flood valve on your lowest drain inside the property. These allow outflow but close under backflow pressure. They're not expensive and they work.
- Disconnecting surface water from combined drains where your setup allows it. A rerouted downpipe to a soakaway reduces the volume hitting the combined system from your plot.
- Keeping gullies and yard drains clear of leaves and silt. A gulley clogged with autumn debris is the first thing to overwhelm in a downpour, and it takes ten minutes to clear.
- Checking that your manhole covers seat properly. A cracked or ill-fitting cover on a shallow manhole allows surface water in directly, which adds to the load at exactly the wrong time.
Root intrusion: the hidden multiplier
On the older streets of Cirencester and the villages nearby, clay vitrified pipes from the 1950s, 60s and 70s are still doing the job. The joints on those pipes are not welded: they're spigot and socket, sealed with mortar or bitumen, and after half a century they've moved, cracked and opened up.
Tree roots find those joints. The roots don't cause sudden dramatic collapse; they grow slowly inward, year after year, reducing the bore. A drain that's 60% clear in dry weather passes water at a lower flow rate but keeps functioning. Hit it with surcharge pressure in a storm and the restricted bore means water has nowhere to go fast enough. Backflow follows.
Properties near mature street trees, which covers most of the town centre and a lot of the older estates, should take this seriously. A root-cut and re-jet once every two or three years is a reasonable maintenance interval if you've had problems.
When to call, and what to ask for
If your drains back up only during heavy rain and clear up afterwards, that's a sign the problem is at least partly hydraulic, either the public sewer surcharging or a restriction in your own pipework that's only exposed under pressure. A standard blockage clearance job might not tell you much. What you want is a CCTV survey done after the pipe has been jetted, so the camera goes down a clean pipe and shows you what's actually there: roots, displaced joints, flat spots where solids accumulate, or a collapsed section.
